This shit is not for everyone: Your girlfriend will not think it’s cute. It’s like He-Man/Korgoth/Thundarr boiled down to its gay porn essence and then crossed with the fight scene from They Live but with more drugs and no colors. There is also a giant cum-monster. The way it gets the full tasteful Fantagraphics treatment of nice paper and pretty printing is like dressing up in a tuxedo and going to a beautifully restored movie theatre with a full orchestra playing in a pit to watch DeathStalker 2.

I liked it and I eagerly await book 2. I’m not sure what that says about me. It distracted me from the book I say I’m reading if anyone asks, which is about the Congo in the late 19th century and which I’ll tell you about when I finish it.

I learned about this from potrzebie and then from wikipedia. These are Sunday comics about Rosco Sweeney, navy man. Newspapers are doomed when they take everything big, bold, colorful or creative like this out and expect people to cough up $2.00 for something they can get for free on their cell phone. Are there even people around who can still draw like this?

Here we see Roscoe coming ashore and meeting up with a mute woman. None of the pretty girls in this story seem to be able to talk, they just look pretty. It’s just like mom always said: It’s not the 1940s without any casually tossed in racial caricatures. More silent pretty girls here but also their talkative parasol-toting crone mother. Their dad must be Rita Hayworth or something to look like they do with that mom.

Butch is really great, although you’d think he would be a better fighter based on his tattoo, name and build. What is Butch short for anyways? It’d be cool if you called your butcher “Butch” for short. It’s funny how Butch is really burly but yet has no body hair, maybe it’s hard to draw.

Here we get some good old fashioned sailor cross-dressing. The appearance of the devious guy from the other boat offends me, since I am personally a devious guy from a rival naval vessel who often comes up with plans to use dames to trick powerful but easily-fatigued aging boxers and I don’t have a nose like that. I think he may be related to the crone with the parasol and the daughters. PS If you’re going to use dames to tire out a boxer, do it in a less G-rated way but then again that’s the 1940s for you.

I just realized that once the guy is dressed as a pretty girl, he doesn’t talk anymore. Listen up girls the message is: pretty girls don’t talk. How can I get at the rest of these to see the bout against the pudgy guy with the wig? You think he won?

My grandma used to have books of New Yorker cartoons from the 50s and 60s and when I think of old NY’er cartoons I think of his style which is really saying something cause Charles Addams and James Thurber and who knows how many other big timers were drawing for them then.

I found some more cartoons of his here. What is up with the women though? Are they supposed to be nude or are they wearing bodystockings of some kind?

Also this art doesn’t look pretty to me. How has the art taken this much of a step backward since art in the 1930s? Is it cause noone will work for $1.50 a week anymore?

I really liked the early 80s FG movie by the way, when is it going to get remade again? I’m ready.

Here we return to Camp Swampy where we learn about the hobbies of the men stationed there. Corporal Yo seems to have a pretty grim existence cause he doesn’t collect anything and just sits on his bed asking Sarge questions. Left unmentioned is General Halftrack’s collection of sexual harassment lawsuits. In fact it seems like Mort Walker(‘s minion) is saying that collecting anything is a hobby for lower class men and dogs, since none of the officers, MP’s or women have any collections at all.

I especially like that Killer is shown beating off. He used to be a real womanizer but they’ve toned it down quite a bit. Cosmo reminds me of my friend Jason Mann here by the way. A solid effort, nice and colorful and it really highlights the enlisted mens’ diverse characteristics.
