Very Serious is here so that you can say clever things in the comments section. It’s a collaborative effort. There are a lot of contributors. We each put a tiny piece of ourselves into it, but there are a lot of us so it adds up.
The questions are for you to answer. The pictures are for you to see. The videos are for you to watch. The reviews are for your education. The podcasts are for you to listen to.
Please tell your friends about this. That way, we can sell ads and use the money to buy luxury cars and super soakers full of Hennessy for everyone. And by everyone I mean everyone including you.

I am worried about your branding with this change to crowdsourcing your banners. How will you monetize? I mean what logo will you use for t-shirts and tschotchkes?

Don’t worry, the long tail will take care of that. Push media will play a role as well. I’ve got it all covered, don’t worry.

Man, you can have faith in me to do anything possible to make it more user-centric and leverage the stickiness, up to and including rounding off all of the corners of every last gif and using all lower case letters.

As a thought-leader, harnessing new media synchronicity, you are incentivizing your core platform to drill-down into a folksonomic Citizen-media experience. When is the launch of the standards-compliant API?

I changed the name to Very Serious from Something Very Serious cause it’s easier to say so now I need new banners.

OK when I looked yesterday at the booming traffic this site attracts, I found out that the most popular page, by a big margin, was the the picture by Greg of the black barbershop haircut chart. It’s like 5 times more popular than the next one. I’m thinking of converting Very Serious into all-black-barbershop-haircut-chart-all-the-time website. There would be animated videos of the charts, we’d hunt down and interview people who’d modeled for the charts and we’d do a historical analysis of them.

@heypal, comments on the site itself can go here, it’s the link on the left side called “about very serious”. I’m glad you like the timestamps. I’m going to fix veryserious up a little bit and add new stuff from time to time but I think I’ll keep this look for a while. You can also put stuff on the message board.

@phil: handy. now that i know where it is and that i never have to go digging for it. you can expect topical comments from me to appear here, in the future.

my comment in restaurants was marked as spam?
11
phil
// Aug 21, 2008 at 1:27 pm
There are false positives sometimes. I have to make it really harsh on comments because there is just a constant deluge of spam, like 100 a day. If your stuff gets marked spam let me know and I’ll fix it.
It’s messed up because really it should just trust any comment by anyone who has had comments approved before. I’ll come up with a new way to foil them.

This weekend I moved the whole website and the message board to a new server. Peter is generously donating the space and helped out immeasurably. I’d like to use this space to thank him.

I think I finally fixed veryserious so it runs much faster. I won’t bore you with details but it involved taking out podpress, which acted like a ho about server resources and replacing it with powerpress, which acts right.

I added arrows for the comments, you can now vote peoples’ comments up or down. You have to be logged in to see them though.

Added random pics for people who haven’t set up pics. Set up google ads so as to get rich quick, if they annoy you let me know.

Phil, I am now jealous of the no pic people. I am going to take my pic down so I get those pics.
You should make “no pic” look like urkle or something or like gwb so they will want to change it.

you mention super soakers full of Hennessy and the need to sell ad space. is Hennessy one of your sponsors, and if not, you shouldn’t be giving them free promo like that. better send them an invoice now; be on the safe side and see if the checks start flowing in.

v.serious is coming up! below is v.serious.org’s net worth (according to the website linked within).
My blog is worth $3,387.24.
How much is your blog worth?
22
heypal
// May 28, 2009 at 8:30 pm
that totally makes the thousands of hours put into this site worth it. proof positive that value can’t always be monetized. thank you, everyone who contributes content. i appreciate it for more than $3,387.24 (but not in real money).

Veryserious.org needs to have a feud with another website. Can anyone suggest a good one to feud with?

oh, or http://www.cosplay.com

phil

Ok the feuds are on. I told Plinky.com in their comment section:
I have a problem with Plinky.com! Veryserious.org is officially starting an internet feud with you for being somewhat similar to veryserious.org!
I’m not sure how this makes me feel. It makes me feel sad because this feud will end with Plinky.com in tears!
Plinky.com is fake. They’re punks. If I see them on the street: boom!
33
phil
// Jul 10, 2009 at 4:58 pm
Étienne at veryfunny.org is nothing but a studio gangster. He acts tough but in reality he’s scared. He won’t come around, he’s scared!
34
phil
// Jul 10, 2009 at 4:59 pm
I emailed furry puppet to let them know the feud is on. Is it smart to start multiple concurrent feuds?
35
phil
// Jul 10, 2009 at 5:05 pm
Dannikins, I checked it out. I can’t feud with cosplay.com, if they banned me from the Jessica Rabbit cosplay galleries (or for that matter the Ms. Marvel galleries) I’d be inconsolable.
36
phil
// Jul 10, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Furrypuppet.com doesn’t seem interested. Since the feud isn’t officially on I’ll refrain from any salty talk.
email exchange below:
Me: I’m proposing an internet feud with furrypuppet.com. If you are interested, let me know. It’ll be like pro wrestling.
Zack: I am not sure if I understand your message.
Me: I am suggesting that our websites begin a feud. You know, like Sarah
Palin and David Letterman or the Game and 50 Cent. Your website was
suggested as one I should feud with by one of my users. It’s a
win-win situation, we could issue press releases against one another!
By “it’ll be like pro wrestling” I mean that it will not be dangerous
to you or your business, not that we have to take steroids. If you’re
not up for it then I’ll have to find someone else.
Zack: Phil, Sorry – this is not something we’d like to be involved at. Good luck.
Phil: No problem, Zach. If I am in the market for a puppet I will look you
up though, they look really impressive.
Zack: Thank you, Please feel free to contact me at any time

veryserious.org is broken. It will limp through Friday and then be fixed up Monday.

// Jul 27, 2009 at 1:27 pm
I am very sad that either the office is not letting me answer questions or we’re still limping along. The office has already ated everyone’s pictures.
Or maybe later there’ll be a bunch of my comments showing up on the Mascot question.
43
phil
// Jul 27, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Oh it’s probably if you put links in there, the spam filter thinks it’s links to viagra ads, I’ll check. The limp has been upgraded to a hobble.
44
Stace
// Jul 27, 2009 at 2:48 pm
I didn’t have the forthought to link to viagra ads or the hamster dance.
Next time I will totally spam the site in the proper manner!

Someone left a comment anonymously “I can’t find the video of the comedian, I think Jeffrey Ross, explaining how people get so mad while flying or why their cell phone takes so long”
The solution is that it’s not Jeffrey Ross but Louis CK, director of Pootie Tang:

Kristoffer you should call up the group administrator for your dental plan and let them know you’re about to submit a big claim! Of all the no-good, low-down, untoward…
56
Kristoffer

Haha, the joke’s on you! I don’t have a dental plan, sucka!
(And by fist I mean the most non-sexual totally platonic mostly not gay but still homoerotic in the same sense as wrestlers sort of way).

I put up amazon ads on the left side, let me know if you find them useful or hate them. I plan to get super rich off of them.

Phil, you are not getting eyeballs with your adds. Haven’t you seen the heat maps? http://www.useit.com/alertbox/reading_pattern.html https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=17954
You got to move those things into the main column or at least up on the page son.

64

“Which, of the Glad family of products, do you enjoy using the best?”
67
phil
// Oct 2, 2009 at 4:22 pm
yeah we should have a theme week where all week every post has to have a link to a different amazon product. We have to figure out what the most extreme commercialization would look like and then double that and then make it a reality.
68

Also if you want to make it so that external links open up in a new window, let me know.

It’s messing with my brain, but I think I like it.
External links opening in a new window… what a good idea!
You must log in to comment. I tried it the other way and had to erase 1,000 ads for viagra and mortgages one by one. Register here, it takes less than ten seconds.
