I think one of the main differences is that a ‘gangster’ is part of some sort of organization.

Thugs wear wool caps and are out by the waterfront guarding the abandoned warehouse. Gangsters pay off the D.A. and when they get married they have a tiger at the wedding.

Gangsters get to have meetings in Italian restaurants, while the thugs have to wait outside for instructions on whose knees to break.

Gangster is a criminal who is a member of a crime organization, aka made man of the mafioso. A thug is just a criminal with no relation to organized crime.
To elaborate on Phil’s definition:
A thug is a kid from the hood who has no choice but to stick up a liquor store to pay for his baby’s diapers, gets caught by the police and thrown in city jail for grand larceny. A gangster “convinces” the liquor store to pay him weekly, using the money to produce a hollywood movie, gets caught by the IRS and gets throw in federal penitentiary for tax evasion.

Phil wins but I think a gangster is the more organized and polished version of a thug. The real question would have to be what is the difference between a thug and a goon.

Ooo…good call April.
Maybe the difference is a goon can’t even really speak, he just grunts, whereas a thug, although shifty, can speak full sentences with a couple of “ya see’s” sprinkled throughout.
Basically a goon is a thug that’s been hit in the face a few to many times and now serves solely and a warm body to throw and block blows.
