Question #769 “Holiday Tree”

posted November 17th by jake

There’s a hoax currently going around that involves the Obamas decorating the White House this season with a “Holiday Tree” (instead of calling it a “Christmas Tree”).

How would you feel about it if this were true? Would “Holiday Tree” be too politically correct? What’s your reaction when people try to de-Christ-ify and non-denominationalize Christmas?

No it doesn’t matter to me. Christmas is already pretty secular and so am I.

“Holiday tree” would make me barf. Blood.

It sounds like the kind of stupid shit that is probably already going on up in marin.

“You know what would be fresh? If life was blander, and more boring! That would be awesome. Fleece vests for everyone. Pass me a bottle of trader joes eggless holiday drink. Did you get your swine flu shot?”

First of all the creeping secularization of Christmas isn’t happening, it’s a made up thing that Bill O’Reilly complains about. If it happened at all, it happened in the 70s.

When I was a kid, it was often referred to as X-mas and they would say “Seasons Greetings” on TV instead of “Merry Christmas” and none of this was by the government or anything but by department stores who wanted to make it clear that they would allow non Christians into their stores for the sale-a-brations.

I think a lot worse than that is the halloween parties they have at Christian schools that are called “harvest festivals” as a way to de-witchcraft them and take it back even further into the past than halloween already does.

I am a Christian and I don’t really find any bit of Christ in how we celebrate Christmas anyway. I really don’t care what they call the ding dang tree, really.

Growing up in a town with more than one Hanukkah bush at friends’ houses, I don’t think I would be offended by the term Holiday Tree. More confused. I mean, holiday tree reminds me of Arbor Day. I have very little association to Christ in the Christmas Tree, and having studied the bible (for the purpose of my English literature degree) I have zero recollection of any magi coming bearing a coniferous tree.
Thus, I’d prefer it was called a Christmas tree so I wouldn’t have to change my lingo.

What we really need to do is find a way to add witchcraft to Christmas.

I’m on the “Who gives a shit how other people celebrate their holidays?” side of this discussion.

@ joe I dont think that kind of stuff is going on here in Marin. I think the most we have are sustainably grown, organic christmas trees or something. I would expect to see a ballot initiative in SF officially banning the use of the word Christmas in favor of Kwanzmaskah. That way a multi-ethnic group of politically active freelance bloggers could obtain seasonal employment

I don’t care, and people who get their panties in a wad over stuff like this are silly.

I only celebrate Festivius. Therefore I’m highly offended that it’s not called a Festivius tree.

Oh no wait, it’s a tree you stick things on people. Who cares what it’s called? My tree is a tiny purple metallic one cause the green ones are so the ’90s.

@ jon oh! but making sure “politically active freelance bloggers [can] obtain seasonal employment” is what the holidays are all about!

Brotherhood, sharing and freedom of speech! These are the reasons we update the names of meaningless symbols of holiday cheer to less offensive, but hip nonetheless, labels of snooze. (who cares, right?) BTW, Season’s Greetings!

i mean… christmas is all about tradition and changing the name almost takes away the history of that celebration…

so its ridiculous. Religion has influenced our lives and our history. Even though i am definitely not a religious person, it seems foolish to try and not acknowledge that history or to be in some kind of deep shame from it. Most of our names are insprired by religion — is that going to be a problem too?
