Peter Arno – drawing board

posted August 26th by phil

drawingboardIt’s crazy how much more influential cartoonists were in the past compared to now.  People now will refer to a situation as being like something out of Dilbert or my coworker will be like “damn I feel like motherfucking Slylock Fox today” but I think cartoons now are not where new terms get coined.  Am I wrong?  That’s just my idea of course I wasn’t born until ten years after Peter Arno died.  The cartoon on the left is Arno’s most significant contribution to the english language.  This wasn’t a phrase people said until after this was published.  How different would your life be if he never wrote that caption and instead had just had the guy saying “Back to the planning stages”

My grandma used to have books of New Yorker cartoons from the 50s and 60s and when I think of old NY’er cartoons I think of his style which is really saying something cause Charles Addams and James Thurber and who knows how many other big timers were drawing for them then.

I found some more cartoons of his here.  What is up with the women though?  Are they supposed to be nude or are they wearing bodystockings of some kind?

do me a solid and share this (on facebook) or
category: a very serious comic
