Cemetery Screenings

cinespiaOne of my favorite summer activities here in LA has to be the Cemetery Screenings at the Hollywood Forever cemetery. The warm LA weather makes this a perfect evening activity, especially if you’re a movie lover. Every Saturday Cinespia shows a movie on the wall of the Hollywood Mortuary inside the cemetery. The “screen” is surrounded by a large grassy area, where people gather on beach chairs and picnic blankets to watch the screening. You are allowed to bring food and alcohol, so everyone usually packs a nice picnic to enjoy during the movie.

Every spring they ask for movie recommendations, and select the best ones to show over the summer. I was sad to miss the screening of Funny face a few weeks ago. It is one of my favorites. This Saturday they will be showing Jaws, which I would love to see, but cannot due to 4th of July activities. I am going to try and attend the screening of A Muppet Movie in a few weeks, because who doesn’t like the Muppet’s? These screenings are also a great way to see a lot of classic films you never get around to watching for whatever reason. It is a perfect date activity, or a great way to spend an evening with friends.

Of course the downfall is that it is in Hollywood. The setting is more than appropriate, but the location can be a pain in the butt to get to, especially on a Saturday night. I reccomend arriving early to get decent parking. It can get pretty crowded, and the available parking is still a bit of a walk, especially when you are loaded with blankets and food. Leaving the cemetery is a lot like leaving a large venue, so be prepared to wait in a line of cars to leave the cemetery. The gates open at 7:30, and the movie usually stats around 9:00, when it is dark enough. They have a DJ to pass the time before and after the movie. It’s $10 a person, and $5 to park. I give these screenings ★★★★☆. They are a lot of fun, but it is a bit of a hassle and takes a bit of planning.

I love watching movies outdoors like this. The whole charging money part is kind of lame, although I guess there is cleanup to be done. Some of my favorites include ‘Purple Rain’ in my own yard several Julys back and ‘Rocky’ at the National Mall. Next week I will be in Denver and they are showing ‘Jaws’ at Red Rocks – but I can’t figure out an econo way to get there and back. Bah!

@DirtyDanSin The money is also suppose to go to the general upkeep and improvement of the cemetery.

Also, I’d always recommed getting there at like 5 to get in line to go into the park. Yeah you have to street park and walk all the way through the cemetery to the screening area, but this way you’re sure to get in and get a good viewing spot. And if you street park, it’s much easier to leave later.

The parking lot doesn’t open until they start letting the line go in anyways. We saw a movie one year, I think it was the Shining and the line was several blocks long by 7pm.
